Immediately after the close of the Revolutionary War, the citizen-soldiers of New Jersey continued to serve their newly won government as members of the
state milita. Initially under the command of Captain Samuel Searing, the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment of the Morris County Militia fell under the leadership
of Captain William Lee beginning in 1774. According to these militia records William Lee was promoted to Lieutenant in 1794, to Captain in 1797 and, on March 12, 1806
he became a Major. William Lee was from Littletowne (Hanover).
