Biographical Notes

James and McCarroll were two prominent Morristown families. The patriarch, Thomas F. McCarroll, was born in 1830 in Chester County, PA, the son of Thomas McCarroll a Methodist minister. The younger Thomas moved to Morristown from Newark in 1854 when he married Laura P. James, daughter of James H. James and Lucy Vail. Mr. McCarroll was a business professional associated with Edmond F. Heath and Co. of Newark. Thomas and Laura had one son, Henry Bruce McCarroll.

Circa 1880 William Prentice of Leicester, England and Newark, N.J. died leaving Thomas McCarroll as executor of his will and guardian of his young son, William Arthur Ellington, a responsibility he shared with Prentice's nephew, John Heath Williams.
