History of Comet Books, Pocket Books Jrs and Morristown, New Jersey

Comet Books, a series of 25 cent paperbacks for junior readers, were published during the late 1940's by Pocket Books. It appears that Pocket Books chose Morristown to be a test market for the series. This collection contains materials in which Morristown residents advocated for the reading of Comet Books and for the benefits the books would impart on the town's youth. However, by the end of 1949 the company chose to rename the Comet Books series for two reasons: they didn't want to confuse "Comet" with "comic" and, results of a study showed the new name of "Pocket Book, Jrs" had more of an appeal to both young adults and their parents.
